I got my first taste of
independence during the fifth
grade. Not only did I have to ride the bus by myself to my new school, I also
got to choose the ensemble I would wear each day. I realize now that my fifth
grade self was proud of how she matched her blue and green
striped polo to the tank worn underneath and that her beloved red headband perfectly matched the knitted red sweater
her sister gave
her once she deemed it too small. To me,
putting together an outfit meant
making sure everything matched. As my adult sense of style formed in later
years, I began to play with the idea of mismatching items, something I wasn’t
initially comfortable doing.
I still struggle with
letting go of the matching technique I learned early on. I have yet to learn
how to effortlessly throw together an outfit that does not carry the same color
scheme throughout. I often try to reassure myself that, although my outfit does
not “match,” the overall outfit that I have chosen does go
together. Transition colors such as mustard yellow, green, and black allow
me to combine the traditionally clashing primary colors in my closet.
Below I paired my black
and white plaid shirt with my dark brown fur vest. Black and brown is becoming
one of my fav color combos and I try to persuade anyone who doesn’t agree
to give it a try. Adding my beet red boots pulled this winter outfit together.
The cute burgundy beanie just so happened to match my boots, which was knitted
with love by my bestie Amanda. This is a super simple outfit to recreate — just don’t
forget to add your own personal style twists.
P.S. how do you feel about my light hair? I cannot get used to it and it seems like everyday it is getting lighter! SOS
Wishing you days filled with hours and hours of Netflix and cookies.
